Smoky Eye 101

Smokey Eyes

For about a decade now the term “smoky eye” has been ever so popular when describing a desired eye makeup look. As a Makeup Artist for these past 10 years, when I ask a client “Describe how you would like to see your makeup”, 99.9% of the time the client replies “I would like a smoky eye!” I may exaggerating a little!

So what exactly is a smoky eye? I am going to break it down as plain and simple as I can! I have also created an easy to follow video tutorial for those of you who are visual.

smok·y (smk) adj. smok·i·er, smok·i·est: Resembling smoke; hazy; dirty; made dark; thick; murky.

So with this said, a smoky eye is eye makeup that resembles smoke. As you know smoke is not a perfect line or one even tone. Smoke is usually dark, smudgy and as a makeup look portrays a sultry and sexy look.

So how does a smoky eye appear? Below there are a couple examples of a smoky eye:

As you can see from the pictures, the smoky eye does not always look the same. There are many looks to a smoky eye which are done with many techniques, colors and products. A smoky eye can be worn by anyone of any age for any occasion. From day to night time, natural to dramatic, the smoky eye has many versions! You can smoke the entire eye, the top lid only or just the bottom… anything goes!

Here is a step by step of a very basic smoky eye look:

1. Prep your eye area. Try using an eye shadow base that is water resistant or crease resistant. This will help to smooth on your eye makeup easier, more evenly and you will see a truer eye shadow texture and color. Also, it is very important for a dramatic eye or for someone who has oily eyelids. Your eye makeup will last longer and look better! I really love Urban Decay Primer Potion or MAC Paints.

2. Use the Stila Eye Kajal (My all time favorite!) to line your eye. This eye kajal is very creamy and pigmented, so use a light hand. Now don’t worry about your line not being perfect, because when using a pencil it rarely is! You can line the top lid, the bottom or both. This depends on your eye shape and your preference.

3. Now use a smudger or a pencil brush to gently smoke out your eye liner. Remember to use the tip of the brush and have a light hand. You want to keep the darkest point around the lash line and blend or “smoke” out the outer edge of the liner. You want a gradual fade from darkest to lightest. The darkest at your lash line and the lightest the furthest from your lash line.

4. You can set your eye liner with a little eye shadow to “set it” for a longer wearing look.

5. Finish your smoky look by placing your eye kajal in your water cil (inner rim of the eye) and your favorite mascara. You know have a sexy smoky eye!

I hope this helps clear up any smoky eye confusion. Time to get sultry!

Zoya Nail Polish: A Healthier Non-Toxic Choice!

November 25th, 2009

zoya_polish_brie_31000000040_zoya-logo-bk

For years I have heard about how nail polish containing phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene and camphor. These ingredients are all chemicals that can disrupt your nervous system, hormones and more. Now that may sound a little dramatic, but I am one to believe that chemicals are harmful to our bodies. We are just women trying to look more beautiful and adding some enjoyment in our lives, so why do beauty products contain these horrible ingredients? The sad truth is that many cosmetics on the market do!

Nail polish being one of the worst offenders, I was more than ecstatic to find ZOYA which is free of phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene and camphor. This brand offers a great alternative to mainstream nail polish with just as many if not more of a color selection. ZOYA even has this season’s very popular matte texture nail polish, so needless to say they are not lacking in the trend department! From the nudist of the nudes to the vampiest vamp, ZOYA has it all!

This polish retails for $7 a bottle, but is best used with their Basecoat and Armor Top Coat. Nail Polish Remover, as you can probably guess from the very potent aroma, is not the best as far as harmful chemicals go either. Luckily Zoya makes a nail polish remover that works great to remove all of the polish layers. You can pick up the entire set at www.ZOYA.com for $48.

In Denver there is a wonderful salon called Ananda’s in Cherry Creek North that offers an Organic Pedicure using Zoya and their home made sugar scrub. This is the best treat and I looking forward to my next appointment!

My favorite skincare products and secrets

November 21st, 2009

Having great skin is very important to me, so I am always on the hunt for great skin care products. I made a video talking about some of my favorite products that I have come across. For years now I have been very health conscious and prefer to use more natural products that are not tested on animals and do not contain parabens or chemicals.

One of the most important aspects to having great skin is to take care of your body from the inside out. Here are a couple of pointers:

1. Drink plenty of filtered water daily.

2. Eat Clean. Avoid processed or refined foods, caffeine and sugar. Eat vegetables, fruits and foods in their raw state that have little to no processing.

3. Supplements. Fish oils are an amazing supplement for the body that acts as an anti-inflammatory. Your hair, skin and nails will thank you! Your skin will look more supple and radiant with fish oil and your complexion can even appear more even because of the anti-inflammatory properties. Try Carlson’s Fish Oils which are very pure and contain less mercury than any brand on the market.

These products work great for me and my combination skin, but they may not work for you and your skin type so please make sure to consult a skin care professional with any major concerns.

Denver, Colorado Bridal Makeup Preparation

October 15th, 2009

images

I created this skin care and health outline for the bride to be for 12 months prior to her wedding. After 10 years as a Makeup Artist and working with hundreds of brides I have seen all of the details and the planning that goes into this very important day of a woman’s life. With all of that planning and stress, I feel that many brides tend to put the most important thing on the back burner… themselves! Now this is not the case for some brides, but I am speaking of the majority.

I can’t tell you how important it is to remain healthy and stress-free during the wedding planning period. I have met many brides who tend to have skin break outs, weight gain and mood swings pop up out of nowhere months after they begin planning their wedding. Our skin is a true reflection of our overall health. As a bride, great skin is also one of the best accessories (besides a beautiful smile!) on your wedding day.

When meeting a bride for the first time, one of the first things that I like to talk about is her skin concerns. Yes, makeup can cover skin tone, but if you have any skin texture such as acne, dryness, etc. than I always suggest taking action to improve your skins appearance. With flawless skin, your makeup will only look better and as a bride you will only feel more beautiful and confident!

This is the same information that I give to every bride that I am working with to create her flawless wedding makeup.

One - Twelve Months Prior To Your Wedding Day: This is the time to really fine tune your skin regime and your diet. Your skin reflects your total health, so drink 8 glasses of filtered water a day, avoid processed/ refined foods, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and don’t forget to take your vitamins and fish oils! Fish oils are a great anti-inflammatory supplement to improve your skin’s appearance, moisture and inflammation issues. Probiotics (Healthy Bacteria) and digestive enzymes are great to improve your digestive health and flatten your tummy. After all, your digestive system is the center of your immune system so protect and prevent.

As far as skin care goes, it is best to find a skin care professional that can help whip your skin into shape! You don’t need a lot of product to have great skin. Find a cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream, exfoliant and sun screen which is suitable for your skin type. Make sure to wash your face day and night! Exfoliate at least 3 times a week and wear your sun screen daily. If you have specific concerns, then talk to your skin care pro about treatment options. Some treatments that are great for having beautiful skin are chemical peels to help refine and even out the skin.

Up to a year away from the wedding is a great time to begin scouting out the Makeup Artist for you. Do a search in your area and view the artist’s portfolio as well as speak to them on the phone to find out if you can see yourself working with them. If you like the artist, then set up a consultation to have your makeup done just as you will see it on the day of the wedding. Be prepared to sign a contract and put down a deposit. Your Makeup Artist should write down all details of your makeup look and the time/ location of where they will be doing your makeup on your wedding day. Remember, this is not a time to bargain shop! I am not just saying this because I am a Makeup Artist, but you pay for what you get! Do keep in mind that you don’t have to pay too much also. I have heard of brides who have spent $500 or more on their Makeup Artist to do their makeup alone. You should be paying at least half of that for your consultation and bridal makeup the day of the wedding.

Try using a mineral makeup like, Jane Iredale which has no preservatives, parabens or harsh chemicals. This will allow your skin to breath and help to nourish it whether than clog your pores and irritate.

Don’t tan! A lot of people still use tanning beds… I know! A great spray tan looks just as amazing if not better and is much healthier for your skin. Tanning is not only damaging for the obvious reasons, but it can also bring out unwanted spots and tones on the skin.

One Week Prior: This is the time to visit your skin care professional to have your last facial or treatment before the big day! Having your eye brows shaped, upper lip waxed, etc. is also a good idea at this time. This way if you experience any bumps, redness or irritation then your skin has time to clear up. If you normally do not shape your eye brows, consider it. A nicely groomed eye brow is great for showing off your eyes/ eye makeup and will look great in pictures

Two Days Prior: This will be the last time that you can exfoliate your skin (Try using baking soda mixed with a little water to create a paste). If you decide to tan, try a professional spray tan versus the sun or a tanning bed so your skin does not turn red. Make sure that you have previously tried a spray tan at least one month before the wedding to make sure that you like the effect.

The Day Of: Congratulations! Moisturize your skin, avoiding any sunscreen and let your Makeup Artist work their magic!

Denver Makeup Artist Danica and Bogdan Shoot.

October 8th, 2009

Recently I have worked with photographer Bogdan Morozovskiy who is based in Denver, CO but should really be living in L.A. because of the great quality and creativity of his photography. Carleen Laronn was our gorgeous model for the day! My friend Nico was in town for the day from Las Vegas and was such a great help to me.  She has such an eye for design and beauty that I would love to have her on every shoot with me.  Somehow she notices details that I would have never noticed!
